HEALTH

ASOFERWA in partnership with Ministry of Health/RBC with the support of Global Fund is intervening in HIV/AIDS and TB Prevention among key populations and has Interventions under Malaria and NTDs prevention and control among hard to reach groups. This partnership is aiming at reduction of new HIV Infections and Malaria Cases as well as their impacts on socio-economic development of the Rwandan population. Interventions are ongoing.

EDUCATION

ASOFERWA consider Education as master key for socio-economic development. With the support from USAID via FHI 360, ASOFERWA supported Vulnerable women, orphans and other vulnerable children affected by the 1994 Genocide perpetrated against Tutsi and the ones affected and infected by HIV/AIDS through school fees payment support and providing School materials. ASOFERWA has an established training center in the City of Kigali, Remera and Gatsata Sectors to facilitate youth having access to the employment skills via technical training especially in sewing or tailoring and hand crafts.

SOCIAL ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

ASOFERWA believes that every human being has a vision/dream which needs to be transformed into reality through economic capacity development. In order to facilitate access to financial capacity and to solve basic needs of vulnerable groups through different approaches, ASOFERWA has been involved in supporting the creation of cooperatives and elaboration of business plans and good management under encouraging Socio economic development of beneficiaries using GSLA approach (Groups of Saving and Loans Associations). ASOFERWA also contributes to the promotion of Job creation and Food Security via modern agriculture technologies.

GOOD GOVERNANCE

Since its creation, ASOFERWA has been promoting civil education in general population and working on socio-economic reintegration of its beneficiaries by ensuring their rights are protected. ASOFERWA also participated in monitoring elections process at community level and leadership accountability process. ASOFERWA also promotes good and democratic governance especially through Gender Equality and equity whereby women and girls play their role in an integrated and inclusive development.

UNITY AND RECONCILIATION

ASOFERWA since its creation has been promoting unity and reconciliation focusing on culture of peace. Among the achievements: Nelson Mandela Village, located in Ntarama Sector, Bugesera District, accommodated 180 families made by Genocide survivors and Genocide perpetrators was built by ASOFERWA and Testimonies are recorded from community members. ASOFERWA was engaged in follow up and management of services initiated as an alternative penalty to imprisonment formally known as TIG in French abbreviation. ASOFERWA played a big role in socio economic reintegration of youth minors from Gitagata detention center whom were involved in military activities before, in and after the 1994 Genocide Perpetrated against Tutsi in Rwanda. Other success stories have been recorded.

ACHIEVEMENTS RELATED TO MALARIA

A needs assessment and mapping of hotspots among hard to reach groups have been conducted for guiding implementation process and service delivery to beneficiaries countrywide
542 peer educators among Malaria hard to reach groups have been trained on malaria prevention package and Integrated Vector Management( IVM) within 22 districts
10 awareness raising campaigns organized country wide with malaria prevention messages, 10 educative videos produced as well as TV and Radio Talk shows, 1 Anti Malaria song produced, 4 TV and Radio Spots produced and aired, 15 radio sketches produced for sensitizing target group on Available Malaria prevention interventions and tools, early care seeking and Role of Community Health Workers,.

ACHIEVEMENTS RELATED TO HIV/AIDS

PROJECT ACTIVITIES AND RESULT/OUTPUTS

1. Conduct supervision of activities

it’s an occasion for field visits at the activities implementing areas and meet representatives of beneficiaries and other stakeholders to discuss envisaged activities among chosen groups such as Female Sex Workers (FSWs), MSM and Transgender and plan for quality of peer education and strengthen linkages for successful health services on benefit of target groups

2. Organize quarterly meeting

with Peer educators of FSW and MSM for collecting data on HIV and STI, referral for HIV testing, promotion of condom use and STI diagnosis this activity consist on data collection and collaboration mechanisms and brings together ASOFERWA’s staff, Health facility workers and Peer Educators as key actors in HIV Prevention and TB program ; Was an occasion to discuss how FSWs,MSM and Transgender are benefiting Health Services, discuss new data collection process and use, reporting tools and discuss collaboration mechanisms towards expected results.

3. The quarterly stakeholder’s coordination

meeting on key population issues at decentralised level, this meeting brought together different key stakeholders in HIV and TB Prevention program especially representatives of beneficiaries to mention FSWs, MSM and Transgender. Discussed the progress of the HIV Prevention program, the achievements under the program and discussed collaboration mechanisms and actions to be taken to reach expected results especially at district level from three districts of Karongi, Huye, Nyanza. This activity was conducted this quarter with concern of FSWs /teen mothers who are sexually active issues and session was successfully done on different dates from each of the three Districts.

4. Conduct outreach

to mitigate and raise awareness to FSWs (Including teen mothers living with HIV) MSM, and Transgender and conduct supervision and mentorship during the COVID-19 to ensure both mothers and children are in good ARVs treatment continuity. This activity consists of visiting hotpots targeting target groups above mentioned and goes with identify, oversee and encourage social reintegration of FSWs (Including teen mothers), MSM, Transgender and promote service delivery to targeted beneficiaries.

5. Conduct mapping and tracing of key population to update selected hotspots and networks

this activity consists of mapping hotspots and networks for easy tracing key population groups such as FSWs, MSM and Transgender through their location whereby we meet representatives of target groups namely peer educators and discuss about peer education, health services provision among key population groups.

6. CSOs Advocacy for stakeholders on IDU (Injecting and Drugs Users)

This meeting serves as an occasion to discuss about Injecting and Drugs Users group, in line with the overview of the HIV and TB Prevention program in Rwanda, Behavior Change interventions needed to that particular group and the expected results under the program. Discusses also collaboration mechanisms and actions to be taken in order to reach on fixed objectives.

7. Conduct training of Peer educators for Female Sex Workers (FSWs) and MSM

on community led monitoring tools, data collection and reporting about Health service delivery, HIV and AIDS and sexual health data issues, this activity consist of training selected peer educators from targeted key population groups especially Female Sex Workers (FSWs) and MSM to represent and train their peers after being trained.

8. Organize mass campaigns

Organize mass campaigns through community campaigns targeting key population groups (FSWs and MSM) to increase their HIV knowledge and HIV services utilization during post COVID-19 period.

ACHIEVEMENTS RELATED TO RGB/UNDP PROJECT OF YOUTH SOCIAL ECONOMICAL EMPOWERMENT

PROJECT ACTIVITIES AND RESULT/OUTPUTS:

1. Job creation for youth in Nelson Mandela Village by owning a Bakery business with its equipment

-A rapid assessment and market survey has been conducted by 5 representatives of the youth
-The existed building was in bad conditions, now the building is finished and clean it accommodates bakery factory.

2. Improved skills of young adolescents in Bakery Making, Production and Business Management.

-We trained 50 young people and 5 member of Nelson Mandela Committee on IGA and Business management specifically Cooperatives Management, the training considered and underlined the initiative already in their minds which is Bakery Making. It was the informal training with an expert in domain who inspired them to think big and get prepared for their bright future. They also taught how they will manage their business as their choosed to be a cooperative and create linkage with microfinances or financial institutions.
-We have made a supervision and mentorship field visits to provide coaching and legal support for legal status.

OTHER ACHIEVEMENTS HIGHLIGHTS

323 houses were built as peace villages on benefit of Genocide Survivors in Bugesera and Kamonyi Districts
55 women’s groups supported to start and manage income generating activities (IGA) from Kicukiro and Gasabo Districts
565 Orphans and non-accompanied children were sponsored and assisted for their primary and secondary education in Kicukiro and Gasabo Districts
ASOFERWA established Technical and Vocational Education centers for Sewing or tailoring skills transfer to the Young people from City of Kigali/Remera, and Eastern Province/Ngoma and Bugesera, Southern Province/Kamonyi. So far 450 People have been trained.
Several trainings were organized for organizational and capacity building on benefit of beneficiaries and creation of decentralized structures in Southern, Eastern and Northern Provinces of Rwanda
210 women have participated in a development and functional literacy program from the former districts of Rukara, Bugaragara and Kahi in Eastern Province.
